Excellent Course - Poor Facilities

Boyce Hill Golf Club makes it into Essex Golf's premier league of clubs for two reasons: it's one if the toughest and best kept courses in the region.

The hilly terrain reminds competitors that flat lies are always a luxury, and offers scenic holes too.

Fast summer greens mean golfers with a good short game will excel here. An excellent drainage system installed in 2002 keeps visitors and members playing all year.

The practice putting green is good, but facilities for a club of this status are poor. The absence of proper driving range (there is a covered hitting area across the 1st hole for wedge and 8 iron practice) is understandable considering Boyce packs 6003 yards tee to green in a limited space. There's no excuse for only one net (indoor), a poorly kept chipping area and a spike bar that can only cater for four golfers.

Decor in the bar and restaurant is drab and uninviting, although the bar staff are friendly.

The showers/toilets are good and the newly extended patio looking across the 18th hole was a fine addition in 2009.

The excellent professional shop is one of the best in the country for golfing bargains and good tuition.

Thursday society packages (8 or more) include a £50 deal that gets you 27 holes, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
